Aval nanachathu Kerala style recipe / sweet coconut poha

Aval nanachathu is a Kerala dish in which poha (flattened rice) is mixed together with jaggery and coconut. Different variety of fruits like bananas, apples, grapes or pomegranate are also added to it. Aval means poha and nanachathu means wet in Kerala. Aval nanachathu is a perfect and healthy breakfast option or can be a good evening snack especially when you are bored of eating same old regular breakfast. It is a no cook dish, you just have to chop fruits and mix everything together. Use brown poha for an even more healthier breakfast.

Yield :- 2-4 servings
Ingredients for aval nanachathu :-

  • 3 cups of thin poha/brown poha
  • 1 big banana, sliced
  • 2 Tbsp of pomegranate seeds/handful of grapes
  • 1 small apple, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of grated coconut
  • 2 Tbsp of jaggery, grated
  • 3 Tbsp of milk

Method for aval nanachathu :-

1. In a big bowl, moisten the poha with milk. If is still dry add a little more.

2. Mix banana, coconut, apple, pomegranate and jaggery with poha.

3. Aval nanachathu is done and ready to serve .

  • Aval nanachathu or sweet poha should be served immediately as poha can get soggy and fruits can get oxidized. 
  • You can use pears, grapes or even mangoes in this recipe.
