Chai masala recipe / Masala tea powder

Masala tea powder or chai masala recipe is a warm spice mixture of whole dry ginger, cardamom, cloves and black peppercorns used in making tea.

Tea is a must have morning hot drink for most of the Indian people. And every family has their own personal way of making tea. Some people like it plain black, some like to add milk and many people like me like it to be spiced. Ginger tea is probably the most common and favorite tea among Indian people.
When you are suffering from a cold or a cough, tea made using this chai masala powder is just so comforting and soothing at the same time. I like having this kind of masala tea in rainy or winter season. Making this chai masala recipe is pretty easy if you have all the ingredients and a good spice or coffee grinder. Just put dry ginger, cardamon, black peppers and cloves in a grinder and process until it is powdered. The best part of this chai masala recipe is that you don’t have to peel and grate a fresh ginger. This masala tea powder is quite handy you just have to boil milk, water, tea leaves, sugar and tea masala together and you are done.

Ingredients for chai masala recipe :-

  • 100 gms of whole dry ginger
  • 2 Tbsp of cardamom pods
  • 1 Tbsp of cloves
  • 1/2 Tbsp of peppercorns

Method for chai masala recipe :-

  1. Put ginger, cardamom, cloves and peppercorns in a spice grinder and process until it is in powder form.
  2. Store this masala tea powder in an air tight jar.

The chai masala powder will be fresh for 3-4 months.
For making 2 cups of milk based tea or chai, use 3/4 to 1 tsp of masala tea powder and for plain black tea use 1/4 tsp of chai masala powder.
