A very popular Goan dish in which freshly roasted spices and coconut are ground together with tamarind juice and then combined with sauteed onion and shrimp.

Goan style shrimp curry is a delicious recipe in which shrimp is cooked in spicy coconut sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of shrimp

  • 1 medium onion chopped

  • 1 tsp of ginger chopped

  • 1 tsp of garlic crushed

  • 3-4 dry red chilly

  • 1 tsp of coriander seeds

  • 1 tsp of cumin seeds

  • 1/4 cup of scraped coconut

  • 1-2 green chilly

  • 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder

  • Small ball of tamarind soaked in warm water

  • 1-2 tsp of lemon juce

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 TBsp of oil

Directions

  • Marinate shrimp with lemon juice, salt and turmeric for 15-30 minutes.
  • Soak the tamarind in warm water for half an hour, then mash it and strain all the juices in a bowl.
  • Roast coriander, cumin, coconut, red chilly until the coconut is nice and brown . Grind it with tamarind juice, ginger and garlic.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add onions and green chilies and cook until the onion is golden brown.
  • Then onion are done,then add ground spices and stir for few minutes about 2 minutes. Add little water if you want gravy and let it come to boil.
  • Toss in the shrimp with little salt and cook for about 2-3 minutes, until it starts to curls up and become little pink .
