Strawberry Chutney

In summer, whenever I go shop for vegetables and fruits, i always pick some or many kinds of berries, in which strawberries will surely be in my basket. Mostly I make salads, smoothies or jam with it but this time i made strawberry chutney out of it, as the strawberries were little tart and the chutney came out real good.

Strawberry chutney is a sauteed strawberries with mustard seeds, ginger, chili and turmeric. Chutney is an Indian condiment which is made in every part of India with different fruits and vegetables. But mostly coconut, mango, tomato or tamarind are common.
Strawberry chutney is a very easy and quick chutney which go really well parathas (Indian bread) or fritters and will be totally good with grilled chicken or fish too. It is a very good alternative to ketchup or any other sugar based condiment. It can also be a very good spread for sandwiches or burgers.
It is a sweet and sour combination with a hint of spiciness from chili and ginger, a perfect way to bring natural sweet and tart flavor from a strawberry.

Yummy strawberry chutney recipe which is super easy to make and goes really well with sandwiches and grilled chicken.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb of strawberries,washed, hulled and chopped

  • 1 inch of ginger, peeled and grated

  • 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds

  • 1/4 tsp of cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp of turmeric

  • 1/2-1 of tsp of cayenne pepper or to taste

  • 2 Tsp of jaggery or brown sugar

  • 1 tsp of oil

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tsp of lemon juice, optional

Directions

  • Heat oil in a wide pan. Splutter mustard seeds, followed by cumin and stir for half a second.
  • Now add the chopped strawberries, ginger, turmeric, chili, salt and mix well.
  • Let the strawberries cook over medium heat until soft and tender, stirring in between along with mashing the strawberries with the back of your spoon.( will take around 20-25 minute.)
  • Mix in the sugar, lemon juice and switch off the heat.
  • Give it a taste test to ensure desired sweetness and sourness. Add more sugar or lemon juice if the chutney is not enough sweet or tangy.
  • Strawberry chutney is done and ready to serve.

Notes

  • Serve strawberry chutney with stuffed parathas (Indian bread) or with grilled chicken and fish and will be good as a spread for savory sandwiches.
