Braised Collard Greens and Radishes

Braised collard greens and radishes is a simple, healthy but flavorful side dish prepared by braising thinly sliced collard greens and radishes in a spicy tomato gravy with a few Indian spices.

The collard greens and radishes are slowly cooked in cumin flavored onion-tomato gravy. The greens absorb all the flavors of radishes and tomatoes and the texture of cooked radishes becomes tender and juicy.
Collard greens are large, dark green, tough and slightly bitter in taste and crowned as a Favorite greens in the Southern USA. As the texture of collard is tough, so it’s perfect when it is braised, sauteed or stewed. It is also popular in Kashmir and is called as “Haak”.
I make collards in many ways but this braised collard greens and radishes is probably my favorite recipe.

Health check :-  Radishes and collard greens has many health benefits.  Radish is a good source of Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, calcium, potassium and magnesium whereas collard greens are rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, iron etc.

A super healthy braised collard green and radish curry recipe in which radish and collard greens are cooked with tomatoes and some Indian spices.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of collard greens, rinsed

  • 10 cherry belle radishes (about 10 ounces), quartered

  • 3 red tomatoes finely chopped

  • 3-4 green chillies finely chopped

  • 1 small onion chopped

  • 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp of coriander powder

  • Salt to taste

  • 1/2 Tbsp of oil

Directions

  • Remove the ribs and stems of collard greens. Stack 4-5 leaves together and roll it like a cigar and slice it finely. Repeat same with the remaining leaves.
  • Heat oil in a wide pan, add cumin and when it starts  to sizzle add onions, chillies and let it cook until onion is translucent.
  • Now add turmeric, coriander and stir for 30 seconds.
  • Add the tomatoes, salt and let it cook until the tomatoes are super soft and release oil.
  • Stir in the collard greens and radishes and mix well. Cover and let it cook until the collards are tender about 10-12 minutes. Braised collard greens and radishes ready to serve.

Notes

  • Serve braised collard greens and radishes with steamed rice and dal or serve with roast chicken or fish.
  • You can use the greens of radishes instead of collard greens.
