Again a delicious side dish recipe from Kerala. Green Onion Thoran is a finely chopped spring onions cooked with coconut and seasoned with urad dal, chana dal and red chilies.

Ingredients

  • Green onion 6 bunches finely chopped

  • Chana dal 1/4 cup

  • 2 tsp of urad dal

  • Few dry red chillies

  • Red chilly powder to taste

  • 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp of mustard seeds

  • 1/4 cup of shredded or grated unsweetened coconut

  • 1 Tbsp of oil

Directions

  • Chop the green onion finely. Wash the chana dal and cook it in enough water until it is almost done. We want dal to be soft but not mushy. Strain the dal and keep aside.
  • Splutter mustard seeds in hot oil ,then add urad dal and dry red chilly and stir for few seconds till slightly brown, then add green onion, chana dal, turmeric, chilly powder, coconut, salt and mix. Put on the lid and let it cook on low-medium heat for few minutes, then take off the lid and let it cook uncovered until it is done. The whole cooking process takes about 8-10 minutes.
  • Green onion thoran is done. Serve it with rice and Dal or Sambhar.
