minutesMatar Paneer is a very popular North Indian recipe in which paneer and green peas are cooked together in onion-tomato gravy. It’s a perfect healthy entree, especially for vegetarians .
Ingredients
250 gm/1/2 lb of fresh paneer, cut into cubes
1 cup of green peas( I used frozen)
1 big onion, finely chopped
1 inch of ginger, finely chopped
6-8 garlic cloves, finely chopped
3 medium red tomatoes, finley chopped
1 tsp of coriander powder
1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
1 tsp of red chilly powder or to taste
2 tsp of garam masala
Salt to taste
1-2 Tbsp of oil
1 Tbsp of cilantro, chopped
Directions
- Soak cubed paneer in 3 cups of salted hot water for 20 minutes. Then take the paneer cubes out and set it aside for later use.
- Heat oil in a pan, add ginger and cook for a minute then stir in the onion and cook until the onion is translucent.
- Now add garlic and stir for a minute, then add all the dry spices and saute again for a minute .
- Stir in the tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are nice and tender and the mixture starts to release oil.
- Add peas and 1.5 cups of water and let the gravy comes to a slow boil over medium heat.
- Now take two paneer cubes, grate them and add to the gravy. Then add rest of the paneer, put on the lid and let it cook for 5 minutes over low heat.
- Garnish it with cilantro and paneer matar is ready. Serve hot with rotis or parathas or pulao.
Notes
- To make it richer, drizzle about 2-4 Tbsp of heavy cream when you are about to take the matar paneer off the heat.
