Nutrela Curry recipe / Soya bean curry

Nutrela is classified as textured soy protein which is packaged soy or Soya bean chunks or granules that are sold under the brand name Nutrela. A perfect way to cook Nutrela is in the form of a curry recipe as the Nutrela chunks are bland on their own and hence absorb the curry flavor very nicely.

The nutrela chunks or granules are a very rich source of protein and are 100% vegetarian as they are made from soy flour. For vegetarians and vegans, it is a perfect substitute for animal or milk based protein. In this recipe, nutrela soyabean chunks are cooked in onion tomato gravy with flavorful indian spices.

Nutrela is a very versatile product and can be combined in many different ways to make Nutrela pulao, Nutrela parathas, upma, soup, Nutrela cutlets or patties, samosas, burgers etc. Nutrela curry is perfect entree for meatless weekdays.

Nutrela Curry is a simple Indian Vegan curry made with Nutrela which is Soya beans or Soy bean chunks, tomatoes, onion and some Indian spices.

Ingredients

  • 1 and half cup of nutrela or soya bean chunks

  • 2 medium onions finely chopped

  • 3 medium tomatoes finely chopped

  • 4-5 medium garlic cloves minced

  • 1 inch of ginger, minced

  • 1 tsp of mustard seeds

  • 2 Tsp of coriander powder

  • 1/2 tsp of turmeric

  • Red chilli powder to taste

  • 2 tsp of chicken masala or chole masala

  • Few chopped cilantro leaves

  • salt to taste

  • 2-3 Tbsp of oil

  • 1.5 cup of water

Directions

  • Boil soya chunks (nutrela) in 3-4 cups of water with salt for 5 minutes. Then drain the water and squeeze out excess water from the nutrela chunks.
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker, splutter mustard seeds and add onions,salt and cook for few minutes.
  • When onions are translucent, add ginger and garlic and saute for few minutes, then add all the dry masalas and fry for 1 min.
  • Now add tomatoes and cook it till oil seperates.
  • Add nutrela or soya chunks and saute for few minutes, then add water and put lid the on and cook for about 2 whisles over medium heat and switch off.
  • Wait until the pressure goes down ,then open the lid and toss in the cilantro and mix well. Nutrela curry is ready to serve.

Notes

  • Serve Nutrela curry with hot chapati or rice.
  • You can also add cubed potatoes in the Nutrela curry.
