Palak Dal is a Indian dish made with yellow lentils and spinach, seasoned with mustard and cumin seeds.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of toor dal

  • 1 bunch of spinach about 2 to 2.5 cups

  • 1 medium sliced onion

  • 2 medium tomato, chopped

  • 1 tsp of cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds

  • 1/4 tsp of asafoetida

  • 1 tsp of grated ginger

  • 4 minced garlic cloves

  • Green chilies to taste

  • 1 Tbsp of lemon juice

  • 1 Tbsp of cilantro leaves

  • Salt to taste

Directions

  • Wash and pressure cook the dal with tomatoes, turmeric, salt and enough water.
  • Heat oil in a deep pan, pop mustard seeds, then stir cumin seeds, asafoetida, green chilies and ginger together for a 30 seconds.
  • Now add onion, garlic, salt and mix. when onions are light brown, add spinach and saute for 1-2 minutes.
  • When spinach is wilted, add dal and let it comes to boil.
  • Now mix lemon juice and cilantro and Palak Dal is done. Serve with steamed rice.
