Pineapple Pachadi / Pineapple Raita

Another awesome and delightful recipe from Kerala. Pineapple pachadi is a yogurt based dish in which sweet pineapple is cooked with coconut and then mixed with sour yogurt and seasoned with mustard, fenugreek and dry red chilies.

This raita has natural sweetness from pineapple, sourness from yogurt, spiciness from hot chilies and a slight bitterness from mustard and fenugreek seeds.
Basically pachadi is a traditional Kerala’s condiment recipe or you can say, it is a raita for South Indian people in which coconut, mustard and cumin paste is added to the yogurt with some boiled vegetables or fruits. Pachadi is always being a part of Kerala’s sadhaya (feast).
Pineapple pachadi is sour and sweet condiment recipe which goes really well with rice and Parippu curry (Lentil curry) or parathas.

Another wonderful yogurt based dish called “pineapple pachadi or pineapple raita” which my mother used to cook in Onam. It is very tasty and goes really well with lentil curry.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of pineapple, finely chopped

  • 1 cup of plain yogurt (well beaten)

  • few green chillies to taste

  • Salt to taste

  • To grind :-
  • 1/3 cup of grated coconut

  • 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds

  • 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds

  • For seasonings :-
  • 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds

  • 2-3 dry whole red chilly

  • 8-10 seeds of fenugreek

  • 1 sprig of curry leaves

Directions

  • Put pineapple, salt and green chilies in 1 cup of water and let it boil in medium heat till it becomes soft enough to mash .
  • Grind coconut with cumin and mustard seeds with little water, if needed.
  • Add ground coconut to the pineapple and let it boil for few minutes.
  • Now take the pan off the flame and add well beaten yogurt to the pineapple mixture little at a time with constant stirring.
  • Heat little oil in a pan and pop some mustard seeds then add fenugreek seeds, curry leaves and red chilies and stir for few seconds.
  • Add this seasonings to the pineapple-yogurt mixture and pineapple pachadi is done.

Notes

  • Serve pineapple pachadi with rice and parippu or Kerala style dal .
  • If pineapple is not sweet enough then add little jaggery or sugar to the pineapple pachadi.
  • Try to use sour yogurt or add little lemon juice to make pineapple pachadi tangy.
